The blessing of home

A home blessing is a small religious ceremony where we ask God to protect and bless a home and the people who live there. If you would like to arrange a home blessing, talk to the parish. They are happy to help and make the ceremony special for your home and family.

When can a blessing of the home take place?

The blessing of a home can happen:

• After moving into a new home

• When a couple starts living together

• At a housewarming party, wedding, or child’s baptism

• In a holiday home or any other property

What happens at a home blessing?

The blessing is like a short church service, but it takes place at home. It includes:

• Music or a hymn

• A short welcome and blessing

• A Bible reading

• A short message or speech (called a homily)

• Prayers (for the home, family, and future)

• The Lord’s Prayer

• A final blessing

• Some music or a song to end

If the blessing is part of a baptism, wedding, or other event, it can be included as a part of that ceremony.

Who can lead the blessing?

Usually, a pastor leads the blessing. But also, a parish worker or even a friend or parishioner can do it.

The service can also be:

• In different languages (in multicultural homes)

• Ecumenical (for families from different Christian backgrounds)

How to set up the space

You can make a simple altar at home:

• Cover a table with a white cloth

• Add a Bible, a cross, a candle, and some flowers

Family and friends can take part in the service:

•Read Bible verses

• Say prayers

• Lead singing or music

You can also choose special themes or songs that are meaningful for your family – including children’s songs if children are present.
